Firewalls & Anti-virus

Firewalls and most Anti-Virus will not block Spyware

  • Firewalls

A firewall is simply a software program or hardware device that filters the information coming through your Internet connection into your computer system. Basically, a firewall is a barrier to keep destructive forces (hackers) away from your property.

  • Software Firewalls

A software firewall is installed on your computer. There are many firewall software programs available, the firewall that comes with Microsoft XP is excellent, if your running XP make sure it's turned on and NEVER turned off. If your not running XP buy a firewall package or upgrade to XP. Many anti-virus packages include a software firewall.

  • Hardware Firewalls

With a hardware firewall, the firewall unit itself is normally the gateway to the internet. A good example is a router. It has a built-in Ethernet card, hub and usually an DSL modem. Computers in your home network connect to the router, which in turn is connected either directly to the phone line or to a cable or DSL modem. You configure the router via a Web-based interface that you reach through the browser on your computer. You can then set any filters or additional information.

Hardware firewalls are incredibly secure and not very expensive. Home versions that include a router, firewall, Ethernet hub and DSL modem for broadband connections can be found for around £50 +.

If you have a broadband connection, a hardware and a software firewall is essential. Most ADSL modems ISP's provide free of charge DO NOT include a firewall. BE WARNED!

  • Anti-Virus protection

A computer virus is a program (a piece of executable code) that has the unique ability to replicate. Like biological viruses, computer viruses can spread quickly and are often difficult to eradicate. They can attach themselves to just about any type of file and are spread as files that are copied and sent from individual to individual.

Viruses won't go away anytime soon. More than 60,000 have been identified, and according to the International Computer Security Association (ICSA)400 new ones are created every month. No one who uses computers is immune to viruses. A good anti-virus program is the first line of defense and ESSENTIAL. Don't forget to update EVERY DAY.
